Sibling Support Group at the Elijah Centre
Due to high demand from parents and the mental health community, we have introduced group sibling support sessions. We believe that intervention is not only for the
child who has challenges, but also for sibling relationships and family dynamics.
Anyone with a sibling understands the impact that they have had on one’s life
and development—whether that impact has been positive, negative or some combination of both.
Siblings see one another’s highs and lows throughout their lifetime: their challenges and their successes, too. A sibling relationship, in all likelihood, is the longest relationship a person will have. Sibling relationships can be emotionally powerful and a significant source of stability from childhood through adult life. Overall, siblings often play a critically impactful role in a person’s social and emotional development.
Thus, at the Elijah Social Cognitive Skills Centre (ESCSC), we aim to offer therapy directly targeting sibling relationships. The focus is centered on promoting and supporting siblings to connect with one another through shared experiences. Siblings are able to participate in a group where they not only learn more about their siblings but more about themselves. The ESCSC intention is to allow siblings to learn to express their feelings and develop greater emotional awareness and coping tools through the support within the sessions. This will encourage the groups to build strength and opportunities for siblings to gain a voice and express themselves through communication.
